After 27 months of tears, lies, half-truths, deceit, misrepresentations, chalkboards, rallies, divisiveness, name calling, and complaining about minutia, Glenn Beck will be leaving his show on the Fox News Channel. Wednesday, Beck and FNC agreed to end his program sometime later this year.

Our favorite idiot seems to have lost the will to continue his drivel, or at the very least, is being driven out by the powers at be at Fox News for being too controversial and irritating sponsors who have distanced themselves from the Glenn Beck show.

The Washington Post says:

Beck’s sometimes outrageous pronouncements — he infamously said that President Obama has “a deep-seated hatred for white people” — were good for drawing attention and viewers, but they made him radioactive among sponsors. They also put him out of step with Fox News’ overall ethic, which is heavy on pugnacious conservative commentary but eschews the sort of apocalyptic rhetoric Beck favors.

Leading conservatives have taken issue with Beck lately, too. Pat Buchanan and neoconservative columnist William Kristol, among others, criticized Beck’s comments about the Middle East after Beck asserted that the uprisings were part of an alliance between American liberals and Muslims seeking to create a caliphate that would spread radical Islamic ideology across the region.

The LA Times added:

News of Beck’s ouster was greeted with jubilation among his liberal critics. The left-leaning website Huffington Post featured a picture of the host with the giant headline: “IT’S OVER.”

“His behavior went from erratic to completely unhinged,” said Ari Rabin-Havt, executive vice president of Media Matters, a liberal watchdog group that has long attacked Beck. “Ultimately Fox had no choice but to make this decision.”

But Harrison cautioned that liberals should not divine any larger political meaning in Beck’s exit.

“A little dip in the ratings, and suddenly people think the whole conservative movement is going down,” he said. “When people watch Beck or O’Reilly or Hannity or Howard Stern, it’s not necessarily equivalent to saying ‘I agree with them.’ That’s one of the biggest myths in broadcasting. Lots of people listen to these guys because they hate them.”

After being derided and charged with trafficking in wild conspiracy theories, Glenn Beck redoubled his warnings that the uprisings in Egypt could lead to an Islamic caliphate spreading across the Middle East on his radio show Thursday.

Beck has come under criticism for his doomsday vision of the potential fallout from the Egyptian revolution. He has warned that the world is “being divvied up” by the “uber left” and the “Islamicists,” and that what was formerly “Ancient Babylon” could emerge as the new seat of “evil” and center of the new caliphate.

On his radio show, Beck struck back at his critics. “When I say that there’s a caliphate, that it is a desire of the Islamic extremists in the Middle East, that is not a conspiracy theory,” he said. “They want a caliphate. Look it up…so don’t talk to me about crazy conspiracy theories.”

He then issued, as he put it, a warning. “I plant my flag in this soil,” he said. “If I’m wrong, so be it. So be it. Then I am wrong. And you can discredit me all you want for the end of time. But I’m telling you I’m not wrong on this one.”

Beck continued, laying out three things he said he knew to be true:

“1. Groups from the hardcore socialist and Communist left and extreme Islam will work together because they are both a common enemy of Israel and the Jew.

2. Groups from the hardcore socialist and Communist left and extreme Islam will work together because they are the common enemy of capitalism and the western way of life.

3. Groups from the hardcore socialist and Communist left and extreme Islam will work to overturn relatively stable countries, because, in the status quo, they are both ostracized from power.”

“Islam wants a caliphate. Communists want a Communist, new world order. They’ll work together, and they’ll destabilize, because they both want chaos, period.”

In November 2009, Glenn Beck exercised his Nazi Tourette’s and told his radio show listeners to “think like a German Jew in 1934, maybe 1931.” What does that mean to an American in 2009?

That means buy yourself some gold.

In reality, Glenn Beck may or may not love gold. But one thing’s for certain: He loves shilling for gold. He loves it so much that his entire doom-and-gloom schtick is predicated upon the money he makes from being the official spokesperson of several companies that fleece consumers that are looking to buy gold he directs them to buy.

He tells you that the economy will collapse at any moment, so buy gold. He tells you that the American dollar will collapse at any moment, so buy gold. He tells you that government spending will cause an economic implosion, so buy gold. He tells you that hyper-inflation you see in Zimbabwe is coming to America, so buy gold. In short, his public persona, as he says here, loooves goooold:

In typical form, Maher responded by comparing the weepy Fox News host to the founder of Scientology: “I think he’s doing what some people before him have done like L. Ron Hubbard, who’s a novelist and decided, you know what, it’s a much easier gig to be a religious leader.”

After Zakaria chuckled and noted that being a religious leader is also “tax exempt,” Mayer elaborated on his well-rehearsed (see: Religulous) thesis: “I mean, there’s a reason they call them the flock, because they’re sheep and they’ll believe anything. So I think Glenn Beck is segueing from what he was mostly–a political preacher–to a preacher preacher. It is an easier gig and you make more money–you know, Jim Baker kind of money. And so, yes, I think that could be something.”

Last Friday, while the cable news world watched Rick Sanchez’s career end in a spectacular crash via an undisciplined and unhinged radio interview, Glenn Beck was blaming the evils of slavery on government regulation, then asked if, via increased insurance rates, “are we creating slaves?” Only in the tortured and hyperbolic world of opinion media can one be expected to hear this sort of analysis.

Mr. Beck was criticizing President Obama’s efforts to reform health care, legitimately criticizing increased insurance rates as a by-product of the reform bill passed last spring. But as Mr. Beck got deep into a metaphor of “enslaving people” with health care, somehow things took a dramatic turn toward lunacy. At one point he claimed that slavery “started with seemingly innocent ideas” and then “the government began to regulate things,” then finished by asking if, by reforming health care, “are we creating slaves”?

Beck opened the following segment by stating, “We are enslaving people with our health insurance and driving the cost of our health insurance up.” He then went down a rabbit hole of American slavery, how it started with “seemingly good intentions” then got much worse, ostensibly due to government regulation. Really.

The President is exactly right when he said ’slaves sitting around the campfire didn’t know when slavery was going to end, but they knew that it would. And it took a long time to end slavery.’ yes it did. But it also took a long time to start slavery.

And it started small, and it started with seemingly innocent ideas. And then a little court order here, and a court order there and a little regulation here and a little more regulation there. And before we knew it, America had slavery.

It didn’t come over in a ship to begin with, as an evil slave trade. The government began to regulate things because the people needed answers and needed solutions. It started in a court room then it went to the legislatures. That’s how slavery began. And it took a long time to enslave an entire race of people, and convince another race of people that they were somehow or another, less than them. But it can be done.

I would ask you to decide, are we freeing slaves? Or are we creating slaves? That’s a question that must be answered.

There have been some who have thought that Beck’s wild successes in the last year might have made him soft in his anti-Obama rhetoric, perhaps evidenced by the relatively politicals-free atmosphere of this 8-28 rally (which he had encouraged). But the following audio clip reminds us that Mr. Beck is still willing to make any metaphor necessary to get his point across, even if some will see it as offensive. Considering that Gold prices are at all time highs in excess of $1,300 it comes as no surprise that people are taking an interest in precious metals. Well, there are accusations that Goldline has grossly overstated prices, essentially gouging customers.

The “victims” of Goldline’s “unfair” sales tactics are often educated middle class citizens according to Weiner. These people are convinced to pay many times the market rate for Gold. Beck peddles overpriced antique coins as a means to ensure that the government
doesn’t confiscate investments as they did in 1933. $87/Hour Part Time Work

However, if the “victims” are “educated” then they should be able to weigh the pros and cons themselves. The hearing had no result, although Anthony Weiner is calling for Beck to stop promoting the sponsor on his site and on Fox News and elsewhere. Today’s Deal: iPads Selling for $14.76?

What are your thought’s about Glenn Beck’s Goldine?

The New York Times Magazine has a big profile out on Glenn Beck. Buried deep within the report was this gem (emphasis added):

While Beck’s personal ventures and exposure have soared this year, his television ratings have declined sharply — perhaps another factor in the network’s impatience. His show now averages two million viewers, down from a high of 2.8 million in 2009, according to the Nielsen Ratings. And as of Sept. 21, 296 advertisers have asked that their commercials not be shown on Beck’s show (up from 26 in August 2009).

This report is consistent with my internal numbers and private list. The discrepancy between my public list, which lists 136 advertisers, and the New York Times’ report is the result of two issues:

Some advertisers drop Glenn Beck, but refuse to acknowledge it publicly.

Some advertisers pre-empt being the target of the advertiser boycott by simply excluding Glenn Beck from their ad agreements prior to airing their ads.

The NYT report also contained one other nugget:

Fox also has a difficult time selling ads on “The O’Reilly Factor” and “Fox and Friends” when Beck appears on those shows as a guest.

For those unaware, the StopBeck effort has been targeting companies whose ads appear on Fox & Friends or The O’Reilly Factor when Glenn Beck is present. It’s reassuring to hear that our efforts are having an effect there as well.

Unfortunately, the NYT report did leave out the fact that the broadcast of Glenn Beck’s show in the UK has run with zero commercials for nearly 8 months. But, I’ll leave you with this parting observation from the report:

Beck’s show is known in the TV sales world as “empty calories,” meaning he draws great ratings but is toxic for ad sales. If nothing else, I sensed that people around Fox News have grown weary after months of “It’s all about Glenn.”

Great work all! See, your tweets and emails do matter.

Onward we go…

(CNN) -Glenn Beck is scoffing at recent attacks from MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann and others after the Fox News host inaccurately told the crowd at his recent Washington, DC rally that he “held” George Washington’s handwritten inaugural address.

“I thought it would be a little easier in the speech,” Beck told his radio listeners Thursday as he dismissed the most recent liberal attack directed at him.

The uproar from the left came in response to a comment Beck made during his Restoring Honor rally on the National Mall last weekend in which he said, “I went to the National Archives and held the First Inaugural Address written in his own hand by George Washington.”

Turns out the Archives’ policy doesn’t allow members of the public to touch rare documents like the First Inaugural Address. Instead, Beck was permitted to view the document through plastic – prompting Olbermann to declare “his story that he actually got to hold it…is wrong.”

“His fib stands in stark contrast to the point of the rally, which was all about restoring the principles of courage and honor that the nation was founded upon,” the publication Mother Jones chimed in.

But Beck himself didn’t seem frazzled by the allegations.

“They are like, ‘He’s such a liar. Glenn Beck is such a lair!’ said Beck laughing off the criticism.

“I thought I’d be a little easier than to say, ‘Yesterday, I went to the National Archives, and they opened up the vault, and they put on their gloves, and then they put it on a tray, and they wheeled it over, and it’s all in this hard plastic, and the because you’re sitting down at a table and you can’t – because of [Former National Security Advisor] Sandy Berger – you can’t actually touch any of the documents because they are very rare’…..I thought it was a little clumsy to explain it that way.”

“Might have been a little too much useless information!” Beck exclaimed. “Once again, they caught me.”
